Would you recognize a serial killer if you met one? Talked to one every day? Artist Lia Anderson doesn't, and neither does anyone else who frequents the Mount Airy Dog Park. But a violent death brings Detective Peter Dourson into the close-knit group, and he is convinced someone is not who they seem. As the investigation uncovers secrets, Lia struggles to cope with warring emotions and a killer watches.

SPOILER ALERT! I try not to include "spoilers" in my reviews but in this case I must make an exception. I was extremely disappointed to read this book and discover at the end that there is no denouement and we do not find out "whodunnit". There are also some "loose ends" which are left unresolved. I was unaware when I ordered the first book that it's only half of the story. Unfortunately the characters were not that well developed and I found that I didn't care enough about them to want to buy the second book. Too much attention was paid to extraneous matters, such as the method used to create decorative pavers, and not enough to character and plot development. I got the impression that the author knows a lot about dogs and gardening, but not much about people. On a positive note, I did appreciate a story which does not use bad language and graphic sexual content. I also liked the device used whereby the murderer's thoughts were interspersed with the story. However, the reader was left with an incomplete picture of the murderer's pysche so we don't learn enough about this person to understand them or their motivation. In view of the lack of resolution at the end, I am very surprised this book rated 4 stars. As stated by another reviewer, I too would have preferred the story to be complete in one volume, and paid more for it, than to be left hanging at the end.

By a process of elimination, I guessed the culprit -- but not until very close to the end!
Don't care for books that make you buy the next one to find out "whodunit"!!!
Great fast paced murder mystery. Plenty of suspects with twists making it hard to guess the serial killer. Had trouble putting novel down.
I should have liked this book. It combines dogs, which I love, with a murder mystery, a genre I read extensively. But I most definitely did NOT like it.

The first thing is not really an error of the author. It's just a style I don't like. I don't like to know what the killer is thinking. I don't like having any hints of whodunnit beyond the clues available to the book's sleuths--the actual evidence and the things revealed in discussions with the suspects and by snooping. Just by making the gender of the killer clear, it already eliminated a large portion of the suspects. Where's the fun in that?

Then the book needs better editing. It isn't just the many repeated words and other basic copy editing issues, but also all the times things are contradictory. A character claims not to know something that was discussed with that character in a previous scene. That sort of thing happens more than once. Also comments like a victim "eats a gun" when the shot was to the temple according to evidence elsewhere in the book. Characters claiming to be told things by one character when it was another that said it. A few words misused as well. It may be that not all readers are as alert to details as I am, but in a mystery it is often these small details that reveal the solution, so the author of a mystery MUST be vigilant and this author failed.

I also have a big problem with the ending but I can't tell you anything without ruining the book for those who LIKE knowing the killer's thoughts.

Overall I'm left not wanting more from this author, which is in some ways a shame, because the writing wasn't all bad. Maybe this author just isn't the right author for me. I did finish the book, so at least it wasn't one so poorly written or so overly wrong that I had to put it down.
There's manipulation with finality, then there's manipulation that leaves you hanging. This one leaves you hanging. When I read SLM, (silly little mysteries) I read them for a fast, escape read. This one never tells me who done it. It is an interesting technique to keep readers coming back, but I didn't think the writing was compelling enough to want to read a second one, let alone a series. Hard to relate to the characters. The main character is a painter, as an artist, I should have been able to find something to relate to, not there.
The characters are shallow, like they were written by someone who thinks they know what a certain lifestyle is like, but misses the central core.
I have read the whole series of The Dog Park Mysteries and always wait anxiously for the next one. This was the first in the Dog Park Mystery series, which I read five years ago and got hooked! The author has now done some revising to this first book, using her experience writing the continuing books in the series.
In this new revision, we, the reader, learn more about the group of friends that have developed their friendship because of bringing their furry pets to the dog park to run and play. I like the mutual support of each other among this group. I love their willingness to help the course of an investigation in the death of the ex-boyfriend of main character Lia Anderson. This investigation introduces a police detective, Peter Dourson. The author has enhanced her portrayal of Peter, making him less an authority, easier going and accepting of this group of friends and their four legged family. He is especially endearing as he becomes the foster parent of the dead man’s dog, and doesn’t have a clue about dog ownership! I enjoy watching the budding romance between Lia and Peter.
Not only is this book a mystery, it also treats the reader to artistic descriptions of paintings and projects that provide visual scenarios and to dogs with personality, There is no profane language, no graphic sex, just a smooth, comfortable read that makes one want to take their dog to the Mt. Airy Dog Park and enjoy the company of friends. Who done it??? It will keep you guessing.
Started nicely and I enjoyed the knowledge about dogs. The "mystery" itself bounced around without giving real clues to try to reach a solution before it was read. After wading through the entire book, the ending never ended. If this is a ploy to get you to read the next book, it failed miserably. This author is on my DO NOT READ list.
